Best Free Backup Software for Windows 11 (Business Use)

Best free backup software for Windows 11: Personal Backup, SyncBackFree, FBackup, Iperius

Windows 11 can already copy your files on its own, so the real question for an IT department is narrower: which free backup tool is allowed in a business, runs on Windows 11, and still does the job once a laptop or a small server depends on it? This article compares four free programs from their vendors’ own pages, checked on 30 October 2026. We have not installed or tested them ourselves; where a feature is missing from a free edition, we say so.

The short answer

  • Most complete free feature set: Personal Backup. Freeware for any use, with incremental backups, AES encryption, shadow copy for open files and FTP or FTPS destinations.
  • Simplest scheduled copy on workstations: SyncBackFree. Free for commercial use, but not for Windows Server.
  • Standard ZIP archives you can open anywhere, plus Google Drive and Dropbox: FBackup.
  • Incremental backups and email reports on a server: Iperius Backup Free, as long as someone stays logged in, because the free edition cannot run as a Windows service.

None of the four is a disk-imaging tool in its free form. If you need to restore a whole machine to bare metal, plan for that separately.

Start with what Windows 11 already includes

Microsoft’s support pages list File History for Windows 11 and Windows 10. It automatically backs up libraries and folders such as Documents, Pictures, Videos and Desktop to another drive, and other folders can be added through a library. Microsoft also offers a separate Windows Backup app, documented on its own support pages.

For one person at home this may be enough. For an IT department it usually is not: there is no central log, no email report when a job fails, and no control over formats and retention. That is where a dedicated free tool earns its place.

Personal Backup: the most features for nothing

Personal Backup is written and maintained by Dr. Jürgen Rathlev. The licence on the author’s site is short and clear: the program may be used by anyone, in any way, for any purpose, without charge. Two branches are updated in parallel. Version 6.4 adds better display on high-resolution monitors, and 6.3 brought installation on Windows 11 with ARM64, improved accessibility and dark mode support.

The free feature list is the longest of the four: full, differential and incremental backups, plain copies or gzip and ZIP formats, AES encryption, Volume Shadow Copy for open files, NTFS permissions preserved, and destinations from USB disks to FTPS servers. The cost is an interface with many options, so expect to spend some time on the first task.

SyncBackFree: easiest for workstations

2BrightSparks states that its free software may be used indefinitely for personal, educational, charity, government and commercial use, with no ads, nags or registration. SyncBackFree runs backup, mirror and sync profiles on a schedule and sends a log by email.

The limits are clear on the vendor’s download page: Windows 11, 10, 8, 7 and Vista only, and server versions of Windows need SyncBackSE or SyncBackPro. Our program page lists the other gaps in the free edition: no versioning, no incremental backups and no copying of locked files. It is a good tool for a user’s Documents folder, not for a database or a mail store.

FBackup: standard ZIP and two cloud services

Softland describes FBackup as free for both personal and commercial use. The download page lists Windows 11, 10, 8, 7 and Vista and Windows Server 2008 through 2025. Full backups go into standard ZIP archives, which you can open without FBackup installed. Mirror backups make a plain copy, and Google Drive and Dropbox work as destinations.

The free edition has no incremental backups, no encryption and no email notifications. Those features belong to Backup4all, the vendor’s paid product, which is shareware (conditionally free). A silent failure is the main risk, so check the job history yourself.

Iperius Backup Free: the server-friendly one, with a catch

Enter Srl lists Windows 11 and Server 2022 among supported systems and states there is no licence limitation and no expiration. The free edition does full, incremental and differential backups to NAS, USB, RDX and network computers, sends email notifications and runs external scripts before or after a job.

The vendor itself names the catch: the freeware version cannot be installed as a service and cannot synchronise deletions to the destination. On a server this means scheduled jobs need a logged-in session. Cloud targets, drive images and database backups belong to the paid editions, which are shareware (conditionally free).

How to choose

  1. Office laptops and desktops, user documents only: SyncBackFree or FBackup. Pick FBackup if users need to open backups without special software.
  2. Files that are open all day, such as Outlook data files: Personal Backup or FBackup, which use shadow copy.
  3. Backups that leave the building over the internet: Personal Backup with FTPS, or FBackup with a cloud service you already trust. Avoid plain FTP for business data.
  4. A small Windows server: Personal Backup, FBackup or Iperius Backup Free. Iperius only if a logged-in session is acceptable.
  5. Every case: a backup you have never restored is not proven. Read our guide on how to verify backups, and keep one copy off-site, as described in free tools for off-site backup.

FAQ

What is the best free backup software for Windows 11?

It depends on the job. Personal Backup has the most complete free feature set, SyncBackFree is the simplest for workstations, and FBackup stores backups as standard ZIP files. All three vendors allow business use.

How do I back up personal files on Windows 11?

The built-in File History copies libraries such as Documents, Pictures and Desktop to another drive. For scheduled jobs with logs or email reports, use a dedicated free tool such as SyncBackFree or Personal Backup.

Is Iperius Backup free?

Iperius Backup Free is a free edition with no licence limitation or expiry, according to the vendor. It cannot run as a Windows service and has no cloud, image or database backups; those are in the paid editions.

Is FBackup free for commercial use?

Yes. Softland states that FBackup is free for both personal and commercial use. Its paid sibling Backup4all adds incremental backups and encryption.

Does SyncBackFree work on Windows Server?

No. The vendor states that server versions of Windows are not supported in SyncBackFree and require SyncBackSE or SyncBackPro.

What is the difference between backup and mirror in SyncBackFree?

A backup profile copies files to the destination. A mirror makes the destination match the source, so a file deleted at the source can disappear from the copy as well. That is why a mirror alone is weak protection against accidental deletion.
